GIVING BACK
Our Corporate Social Responsibility Strategy
Our Corporate Social Responsibility Strategy
Unalome’s CSR is based on three main pillars: Education, Waste Management and Ocean Protection.
Living and working in Indonesia, founders Ako Ardalan and Michel Schoppe have witnessed first-hand the challenges both the community and the environment are facing. This is obviously not just an Indonesian problem, but a global issue but we believe change starts from within and at your own doorstep.
“We want to give back to our community! Here in Bali where we both live and Unalome is headquartered, as well as in Java, where all our furniture is produced. Change starts with you, that’s why it’s not only part of our business strategy to create and ensure above-local-standard working conditions, we are also very proud to support two amazing local grassroot organisations focused on education, waste management and ocean protection.”
Sungai Watch, run by Make a Change World, sets up trash barriers in Bali’s rivers to prevent plastic waste ending up in our precious ocean. Unalome has financed a trash barrier in the busy coastal town of Canggu, well known to surfers, expats and travelers. Over the past 5 years Canggu has become one of the busiest destinations on the island resulting in more trash being produced every day. Our trash barrier prevents inorganic waste being washed into the ocean. It is part of a Bali wide project that has collected 300,000 pounds of plastic in only 8 months been recycled or reused, avoiding further ocean pollution.
Sidetapa English Corner is an educational project in the mountains north of Bali that we are very proud to support. It is run by locals who are providing free English classes to currently 120 children aged 9-17. The children are often left with no proper education in this area of Bali making it impossible for them to find jobs in the tourism sector, the main industry on the island. Not only are the children learning English, in return for their free classes they run weekly trash-collection activities, collecting plastic waste around their villages, which is then sent to recycling facilities. This way they learn about the impact of plastic on the environment and how important waste management is, aiming at avoiding single use plastic in general. We are supporting Sidetapa English Corner with an ongoing, monthly donation and have built a new classroom for the children in a remote village in the area.
Unalome not only stands for unique design and high-quality, eco-sustainable furniture.
We believe change is imminent and we are proud to be part of this global movement of raising awareness for the people and the planet.
